My mission was grounded in the shifting paradigm of education: the increasing inclination for learning outside the boundaries of traditional institutions. Motivated by this trend, I embarked on a proactive research initiative as part of the discovery phase, even before the actual product blueprint was etched. By delving into the realms of non-traditional education and engaging with volunteers, I aimed to understand their unique perspectives, desires, and challenges when venturing into new learning terrains or pursuing degree programs. My commitment to a robust experience strategy is the linchpin of this journey, and this narrative offers a window into my strategic methodology.

Diving Deep into the Market and Business

The primary goal of this phase was to gain an in-depth understanding of the intricate market landscape. By systematically dissecting the competitive offerings and studying the audience's preferences, the aim was to identify unexplored niches and opportunities. By amalgamating insights from diverse sources like market analyses, ecosystem mappings, and industry trends, I aimed to build a holistic view that would guide strategic decision-making and ensure our product stands out in a saturated market.

Market & Audience Analysis

I embarked on a meticulous study of the competitive products, services, and experiences, always keeping the end user in focus. This endeavor was multifaceted, encompassing not just products and services but also understanding market dynamics and competitor strategies. To ensure a holistic view, I used a rich blend of research reports, survey outcomes, and industry insights. A vital aspect of this study was recognizing the diverse learning needs of students at different stages, ranging from the foundational years of K1 to the more advanced and specialized needs of adult learners.

Ecosystem Map

In my quest to analyze the breadth of current learning solutions in the market, I crafted an intricate Ecosystem Map, drawing from a competitive analysis that highlighted latent opportunities.

Decoding the Audience

The central aim was to delve into the intricate tapestry of user behaviors, preferences, and motivations within their native environments. This objective was pursued through a blend of immersive, contextual research methodologies, combined with the active engagement of users and leveraging both primary and secondary data sources. The overarching goal was not merely to observe but to genuinely understand, empathize, and capture the nuanced facets of the users' worlds, laying a solid foundation for creating informed and user-centric design solutions.

Foundational Research

Rooted in authentic, real-world contexts, I conducted in-depth interviews with nine volunteering users. These face-to-face contextual interviews took place in their chosen natural learning environments — predominantly their homes or designated office spaces optimized to minimize distractions. This setting allowed me to consider all additional artifacts and tools that users naturally gravitated towards during their learning process. These interactions proved pivotal, offering rich insights into their genuine needs, concerns, and aspirations.

User and Task Analysis

Armed with insights from these immersive interviews, my strategy was clear – deeply understand the user. I crafted detailed user and task analyses, drilling down to the specifics of their interactions.

User Archetypes (Persona)

With the vivid tapestry of insights from my volunteering user interviews as a backdrop, I articulated User Archetypes, unearthing invaluable perspectives into users' mental models.

Audience Archetype Matrix

Recognizing the power of diverse data sources, I dove deep into online forums and communities, observing and documenting user behaviors in their natural digital habitats. By posting polls, I actively engaged with community members, gathering data directly from participants. Additionally, I capitalized on existing studies and insights, ensuring that my analysis benefited from a rich tapestry of both primary and secondary research. This multifaceted approach allowed me to identify and focus on high-performing behavioral segments, setting a robust foundation for comprehensive user understanding and impactful research.

Validating and Celebrating Insights

In this phase, the focal point was to rigorously vet and authenticate the gathered data, ensuring that insights gleaned were both accurate and actionable. This was achieved through a meticulous review of research findings, constantly challenging and fine-tuning our assumptions. The emphasis was not just on validation but also on the celebration of the depth and richness of the insights uncovered, solidifying a user-centric foundation that would steer future design decisions with precision and empathy.

Design Persona

Drawing upon the reservoir of feedback and data from the contextual interviews, I meticulously sifted through the research findings. This iterative process involved constantly validating and refining assumptions, ensuring both primary and secondary personas were precisely represented and spotlighted.

Mental Model Diagram

Observing users in their organic environments, reflecting on the nuanced details from the contextual interviews, I harvested profound insights. This treasure trove of data and observations illuminated the path for discerning design decisions.
